Background of the Study :
Digital transformation has emerged as a transformative force in modern economies, reshaping industries and driving economic performance. In Nigeria, the ICT sector in Lagos State has witnessed rapid growth as digital technologies—such as cloud computing, data analytics, and e-commerce platforms—are increasingly integrated into business operations. These technological advancements have enhanced productivity, reduced operational costs, and expanded market reach, contributing significantly to economic diversification (Ibeh, 2023). The shift toward digital platforms has also fostered innovation and created new business opportunities. However, challenges including cybersecurity threats, inadequate digital infrastructure, and disparities in digital literacy continue to hinder the full realization of digital benefits (Eze, 2024). This study appraises the impact of digital transformation on economic performance by analyzing the ICT sector in Lagos State. It explores how digital initiatives drive productivity improvements, influence competitive dynamics, and contribute to overall economic growth, while also addressing the barriers that must be overcome to sustain a robust digital economy (Akin, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite significant progress in digital technologies and the growing prominence of the ICT sector in Lagos State, the anticipated positive impact on Nigeria’s overall economic performance has not been uniformly observed. Although digital transformation has the potential to drive innovation and boost productivity, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and unequal access to digital resources limit its benefits. The absence of a cohesive digital policy framework exacerbates these issues, resulting in an uneven distribution of technological gains across sectors and regions (Onyema, 2023). This study seeks to investigate the extent to which digital transformation has impacted economic performance in Nigeria and to identify the barriers that inhibit its full potential. Addressing these challenges is critical for maximizing the economic contributions of digital initiatives (Nwachukwu, 2024).
